Chapter 5 Questions.

4)    Why does the dining hall at Pencey serve steak on Saturday nights?  Why is this reason typical of Pencey in general, at least at Holden perceives it?
A: They serve steak on Saturday nights because on sunday a lot of parents went to the school and they would probably ask their children what they ate last night, basically to give a good impression about the school.
5)    What does the fact that Holden invites Ackley to the movies show about Holden’s personality?
A: It shows he is a friendly person, he's nice to others even if he doesn't like them a lot.
6)    Why doesn’t Holden throw the snowball?
A: Because everything looked so nice and white, he didn't want to ruin those things.
7)    Does it surprise you that Holden writes the composition for Stradlater?  Why do you think he does it?
A: It did surprise me because why would anyone do others work just because they didn't want to, but I think he did it because he didn't have anything better to do.
8)    Why is Holden “not too crazy about describing rooms and houses” (38)?
A: Because they didn't mean anything to him, they were boring things.
9)    Compare and contrast Allie and Holden, based on Holden’s description of his younger brother.
A: Allie was really smart and a really good person, he never got mad, but Holden wasn't smart, he was kicked out because he wasn't good at school.
10) What words and actions demonstrate how Holden feels about Allie?  List at least two examples.
A: When he broke every window in the garage and his hand while doing it, because he was angry about Allie's death. And also the way he talks about Allie, he describes him as a wonderful person, for example "It wasn't just that he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways." also "God, he was a nice kid though"
